Introduction
Savitribai Phule was one of India’s greatest social reformers, educationists, and pioneers of women’s rights. She is remembered as the first female teacher of India and for her tireless efforts to spread education among girls and oppressed communities.
Early Life and Education
Savitribai Phule was born on 3 January 1831. She completed her studies at the Normal School during 1846–47. She also became the first Indian woman to receive formal teacher training at Mrs. Mitchell’s Normal School, where her educational abilities were recognized.
She was married to the great social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, who strongly supported women’s education and social equality.
Pioneer of Women’s Education
Savitribai Phule understood the importance of education and made educating women her life mission.
Together with Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, she started the first girls’ school in India at a time when educating girls was largely neglected by society. They believed that if girls were educated, it would uplift not only women but future generations and society as a whole.
Their efforts gradually brought positive change and recognition.
Education for the Oppressed
Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule believed that education should reach every section of society. In 1852, they started a school for the untouchables and girls from oppressed castes were encouraged to study there.
This was a revolutionary step toward equality and social justice.
Social Reforms
Savitribai Phule’s work extended beyond education. She fought against the injustices of a male-dominated society and worked for women’s dignity and freedom.
She supported:
- Widow remarriage
- Shelter homes for Brahmin widows
- Court marriages
- Equality for untouchables
In 1868, she opened the well in her backyard for untouchables to use for drinking water.
In 1873, she adopted the son of a widow, showing her commitment to humanity and reform.
Leadership Role
In 1893, Savitribai Phule was appointed President of the Satyashodhak Samaj Parishad, continuing the movement for truth, equality, and justice.
Final Days
On 10 March 1897, Savitribai Phule passed away while serving victims of the plague. She sacrificed her life while helping others.

A commemorative postage stamp was issued on the Death Centenary of Savitribai Jyotirao Phule, honouring the first female teacher of India and a leading figure of the social reform movement in Maharashtra.
Conclusion
