Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (17 March 1920 – 15 August 1975), fondly known as Bangabandhu, is inseparably linked with the history and spirit of Bangladesh’s Liberation. Born in Tungipara, Gopalganj district, he emerged as one of the most influential political leaders of the 20th century. His powerful voice against institutional discrimination inspired a mass movement that ultimately led to the birth of an independent Bangladesh.
Champion of Freedom and Justice
Bangabandhu’s life was defined by courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his people. His steadfast opposition to injustice resulted in years of imprisonment, yet his resolve never weakened. Secularism, equality, and pride in language and culture formed the core of his ideology. When the Pakistani regime unleashed state-sponsored violence and mass atrocities on Bangla Bhumi, Bangabandhu became the symbol and source of inspiration for the resistance that freed Bangladesh from repression, domination and genocide.
Legacy and Iconic Presence
Bangabandhu’s legacy lives on not only through history but also through his enduring image. Even a century after his birth, his iconic attire—long kurta, pyjama and the black “Mujib Coat”—continues to evoke respect, reverence and emotional connect, just as it did during the historic year of 1971. He is revered not only in Bangladesh but also in India, where he is remembered as a hero of the Liberation War.
Mujib Borsho and Global Recognition
During the inauguration of ‘Mujib Borsho’—the centenary celebrations of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 17 March 2020—the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, described Bangabandhu as “one of the greatest personalities of the last century” and said that “his entire life is an inspiration for all.” These words reflect the deep respect Bangabandhu commands beyond national boundaries.
India–Bangladesh Friendship
A former student of Islamia College (now Maulana Azad College), Kolkata, Bangabandhu shared a special bond with India. As the leader of independent Bangladesh, he worked tirelessly to strengthen friendly and cooperative relations between India and Bangladesh. He famously referred to the people of India as the best friends of the people of Bangladesh. The vision and path laid down by Bangabandhu continue to guide the partnership, progress and prosperity of both nations.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To honour his extraordinary contribution and lasting legacy, the Department of Posts is pleased to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the Birth Centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The stamp stands as a tribute to Bangabandhu’s life, ideals and his pivotal role in shaping the destiny of Bangladesh.
