Freedom Fighter and Statesman from Bihar
Early Life and Inspiration
Shyam Narayan Singh was born in 1901 and emerged as one of Bihar’s courageous freedom fighters and respected legislators. From a young age, he was deeply inspired by the Indian freedom movement and came under the influence of national leaders such as Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, with whom he later worked closely.
Role in the Freedom Struggle
The struggle for independence shaped Shyam Narayan Singh’s life and mission. He actively participated in various nationalist movements and repeatedly confronted British authorities. In 1937, he was imprisoned for nine months, marking the beginning of several incarcerations. During the Quit India Movement of 1942, the colonial administration considered him such a serious threat that a shoot-at-sight order was issued against him.
Contribution to the 1947 Agitation
Shyam Narayan Singh played a historic role in the 1947 agitation in Patna. He was the last leader to address the gathering at the Secretariat, speaking boldly against British rule. His speech was followed by police firing in which seven young men lost their lives. The site later became home to one of Patna’s most prominent memorials, the Martyrs’ Memorial (Shaheed Smarak), symbolizing sacrifice and resistance.
Legislative Career and Public Service
Recognizing the importance of democratic institutions, Shyam Narayan Singh entered electoral politics early and became a member of the legislature in 1937. He continued to serve the people for many years, earning a reputation as a committed and principled public representative.
Contribution to Education
Singh was deeply concerned about improving educational standards in Bihar. As Chairman of the District Board and a member of the Patna University Senate, he advocated measures to strengthen educational institutions and expand access to learning across the state.
Humanitarian Courage during Communal Riots
One of the most remarkable chapters of his life was during the communal riots of 1946. At great personal risk, Shyam Narayan Singh saved the lives of nearly 6,000 people from the minority community in Bela village. He sheltered them in a garden behind his family temple, demonstrating extraordinary courage, compassion and commitment to communal harmony.
Legacy and Commemoration
Shyam Narayan Singh passed away in 1968, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, public service and humanity.
