Overview of the Sickle Cell Challenge in Tribal Communities

The Sickle Cell Eradication – 2047 initiative addresses one of India’s most pressing genetic health challenges. With around 1.5 crore people living in tribal-dominated areas of Madhya Pradesh, sickle cell anemia has been a serious health concern. Targeted screening, genetic counseling, and comprehensive treatment form the cornerstone of the State Haemoglobinopathy Mission.

Pilot Project Launch: November 2021

On November 15, 2021, the Honorable Prime Minister launched a pilot project for sickle cell screening in Alirajpur and Jhabua districts, coinciding with Janjatiyan Gaurav Diwas. The pilot successfully screened over 9.17 lakh individuals, marking the beginning of a nationwide eradication effort.

Launch of the Sickle Cell Eradication Mission

The first pilot project for sickle cell screening was launched on November 15, 2021, in Alirajpur and Jhabua districts, testing 9.17 lakh people under the State Haemoglobinopathy Mission.

Building on its success, the Sickle Cell Eradication Mission – 2047 was inaugurated on July 1, 2023, in Shahdol district, Madhya Pradesh, covering over 1.11 crore people across 89 development blocks and 17 states nationwide. By World Sickle Cell Day, June 19, 2024, screenings had reached 71.27 lakh individuals, identifying 1,49,305 carriers and 22,666 patients.

Strengthening Testing and Treatment Facilities

  • HPLC machines for confirmatory testing are now available in every district hospital.
  • Free diagnostic tests such as CBC, total iron, and serum ferritin are provided.
  • Special Counseling Cards are issued for genetic counseling to prevent hereditary transmission, with 46.04 lakh cards distributed to date.

Integrated Treatment Centers and Patient Care

Patients receive hydroxyurea, folic acid, and blood transfusions as needed. A National Sickle Cell Portal and mobile app facilitate efficient reporting and data tracking. POC Kits (Point of Care Kits) allow rapid on-site screening for pregnant women and newborns. Specialized newborn tests within 72 hours are conducted at AIIMS Bhopal.

Training and Prenatal Prevention

  • ICMR–NIRTH, Jabalpur provides training and technical support for field workers, managerial staff, and medical personnel.
  • Collaboration with Sankalp India enables prenatal diagnosis, preventing transmission to the next generation.
  • A treatment and follow-up booklet ensures ongoing management, medication access, and regular doctor check-ups.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

In recognition of this landmark mission, the Department of Posts released a commemorative stamp celebrating Sickle Cell Eradication – 2047. The stamp promotes awareness, education, and appreciation for the efforts in combating sickle cell anemia in India.
