Our Lady of Snows Basilica, popularly known as the Snows Basilica, is one of the most revered Christian shrines in South India. Situated in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), this historic church stands as a striking landmark that reflects India’s rich social and cultural history. It is a living testimony to India’s contact with medieval Europe and remains a cornerstone of the country’s multicultural heritage.

Historical Origins

The origins of the Basilica date back to 1538 A.D., when Fr. Pedru Consalves built a church in Tuticorin and dedicated it to St. Peter. Later, through the efforts of the priests of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a new church dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy was consecrated on 5th August 1582 by Rev. Monsignor Devoura, coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady of Snows.

This marked the beginning of a long and significant spiritual tradition associated with the church.

Growth and Architectural Development

Over time, the church underwent several transformations. The present structure took shape largely due to the efforts of Fr. Vigil Mange, who worked tirelessly to beautify and strengthen the building. Despite facing opposition from the Dutch authorities, he secured permission from the Dutch Government in Ceylon to proceed with reconstruction.

The newly constructed church was consecrated and blessed on 5th August 1713, once again on the Feast of Our Lady of Snows. Built in elegant Portuguese architectural style, the Basilica showcases classic European influences blended harmoniously with the local cultural landscape.

The Sacred Statue

A significant feature of the Basilica is the revered statue of Our Lady of Snows. Originally housed in a chapel at a convent of the Augustinian Sisters in Manila, Philippines, the statue was sent to Tuticorin at the wish of Francis Xavier. It arrived at the church on 9th June 1555 A.D., further strengthening the spiritual bond between India and Southeast Asia.

Administrative Transitions

From 1857 onwards, the local faithful faced administrative challenges due to overlapping control by the Dutch, Portuguese, and French authorities over the diocese and parish. This issue was finally resolved in 1923. Subsequently, in 1930, the Church of Our Lady of the Snows came under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Thoothukudi.

In recognition of its historic and spiritual importance, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the status of a Basilica on 30th July 1982, marking its 400th anniversary.

A Living Symbol of Faith and Harmony

For centuries, Snows Basilica has attracted devotees from across the country and abroad. People of all faiths visit the shrine throughout the year seeking peace, solace, and blessings. The annual feast celebrated in August draws large gatherings, reinforcing its status as a major pilgrimage centre.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To honour this remarkable monument of faith, history, and architectural beauty, India Post has released a commemorative postage stamp on Snows Basilica. The stamp celebrates the enduring legacy of this sacred shrine and its role as a symbol of India’s cultural dialogue with the world.
