The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed annually on November 29, serves as a reminder of the global community’s commitment to supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. Dating back to ancient times, Palestine holds a rich heritage as one of the world’s oldest civilizations, with its name tracing back to the Philistines who inhabited the land of Canaan over 4,000 years ago.
However, in the late 19th century, imperialistic and Zionist forces colluded to establish a Jewish State in Palestinian territory, leading to the formation of Israel on May 15, 1948. Throughout this struggle, India has maintained strong emotional ties with the Palestinian people, rooted in its own history of freedom struggle.
Since gaining independence, India has consistently spoken out against the denial of the Palestinians’ inherent rights, advocating for their cause on numerous occasions, including at the United Nations. In 1980, India accorded diplomatic status to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), recognizing it as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. That same year, Mr. Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the PLO, visited India, further strengthening the ties between the two nations.
India’s support for the Palestinian struggle aligns with its own principles and ideals, reflecting a commitment to justice and solidarity. Despite being a people in exile, the Palestinians remain steadfast in their determination to reclaim their rightful rights under the leadership of the PLO. The fulfillment of their aspirations is seen as inevitable, and India stands in solidarity with their journey towards self-determination.
The Indian Post & Telegraphs Department is honored to issue a special stamp commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, symbolizing India’s unwavering support for their cause.
