Sports – 1988: Commemorative Stamps
In celebration of the Seoul Olympics, the Department of Posts has issued a set of two stamps under the theme “Sports-1988.” These stamps honor India’s sports achievements and the role of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Stamp 1: The Glory of Sport

- Hockey: India boasts a storied history in hockey.
- Billiards: World champions like Wilson Jones, Michael Ferreira, and Geet Sethi have brought India fame.

- Tennis: Stalwarts like Ramanathan Krishnan and Vijay Amritraj have shone on the international stage.
- Athletics: Icons such as Milkha Singh and P.T. Usha have narrowly missed Olympic glory.
- Shooting: Dr. Karni Singh, who set a skeet record in 1967, and R.R. Randhir Singh, who won four gold medals at the Pesla-Sakan Tournament in Singapore, have been prominent figures.
- Football: India’s footballing prowess was showcased in the 1948, Helsinki, and Melbourne Olympics.
- Chess: Young Indian chess prodigies have elevated the country’s status to the Master’s class.
- Badminton: Players like Prakash Padukone, Nandu Natekar, and Dinesh Khanna have made significant marks.
- Boxing, Wrestling, Long-Distance Swimming: India has also excelled in these sports.

Stamp 2: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Logo
- IOA’s Role: The second stamp features the IOA logo. The IOA is the apex sports body affiliated with the International Olympic Committee, responsible for India’s participation in the Olympics, Commonwealth, Asian, and South Asian Games.
- Formation and History: The IOA was formed in 1927 with Sir Dorabji Tata as President and Dr. A.J. Noehrem as General Secretary. The Patiala family led the IOA from 1928 to 1976.
- Milestones: Norman D. Oritchard was the first to represent India in the 1900 Olympics. In 1920, Sir Tata sent a token team of four athletes to the Olympics.
- Mission: The IOA continues its efforts to bring outstanding sportspersons to the fore.
