The Sri Mariamman Temple in Singapore is the oldest Hindu temple in the country, founded in 1827. Dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, known for her power to cure illnesses and protect against diseases, the temple stands as a spiritual and cultural landmark for the Indian community in Singapore.
Architecturally magnificent, the temple’s gopuram (towering entrance) is adorned with intricate sculptures of deities, mythological figures, and symbols of Hindu tradition. It represents not only a place of worship but also a center of social and cultural gathering for early Indian settlers in Singapore.
The stamp also features a gold earring found in South India, now preserved at the Indian Heritage Centre, Singapore, bearing a lion or “singha” motif. This motif connects directly to the origins of Singapore’s name — “Singapura”, meaning Lion City.
The Sri Mariamman Temple stands as a symbol of India–Singapore ties, reflecting the deep-rooted civilizational, cultural, and spiritual connections that go beyond economic relations, celebrating centuries of shared heritage and mutual respect.
Through the issuance of this stamp under the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit 2018 series, the shared cultural and spiritual heritage between India and Viet Nam is celebrated — a reminder of the enduring bonds of faith, tradition, and friendship that unite the two nations.
