Themes

The Nagar Sagar Kund stepwells are a pair of identical and exquisitely designed wells located in the historic town of Bundi, Rajasthan. Situated near the Chogan Gate in the heart of the city, these twin stepwells stand as magnificent examples of Bundi’s distinctive water architecture and craftsmanship.

Originally known as Janana Sagar and Ganga Sagar, the stepwells are now collectively referred to as Nagar Sagar Kund. They were commissioned between 1871 and 1875 by Maharani Chandrabhanu Kumari, during the reign of Maharao Raja Ram Singh. Built in finely cut stone masonry, the twin wells display a perfect sense of symmetry and proportion, highlighting the advanced engineering and aesthetic sensibility of the time.

These stepwells were not merely sources of water but also served as cooling sanctuaries and gathering spots for the local community, particularly in the arid climate of Rajasthan. Their design reflects Bundi’s unique blend of functionality and ornamentation, where even utilitarian structures were transformed into works of art.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To celebrate India’s enduring architectural legacy, the Department of Posts has issued a commemorative postage stamp on the Nagar Sagar Kund. The stamp captures the twin beauty of these stepwells symbols of Rajasthan’s rich history of water conservation and artistic brilliance.
