Scholar, Spiritual Leader and Statesman
Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal was born on 04 May 1936 at Panakkad near Malappuram, Kerala. He was the son of P. M. S. A. Pookoya Thangal, a noted freedom fighter and spiritual leader.
Education and Scholarship
After completing his preliminary religious education and high school studies, he travelled to Egypt for higher studies. Between 1956 and 1966, he studied at the prestigious Al-Azhar University and Cairo University. He earned a postgraduate degree in Arabic linguistics and was deeply versed in Sufi traditions.
An accomplished scholar, Thangal frequently wrote articles on Indian culture, literature, and religion. His Malayalam collection of essays titled Religion–Society–Culture received the S. K. Pottekkatt Award, instituted in memory of the Jnanpith laureate S. K. Pottekkatt.
Educational and Philanthropic Service
Education and philanthropy formed the core of his public life. He was closely associated with numerous educational institutions, including Mampad College — the first regular college in East Eranad, an educationally backward region of erstwhile Malabar — and Nooriya Jamiya Islamiyya at Pattikkad. He envisioned imparting quality education grounded in strong moral values.
His commitment to the socio-educational upliftment of the underprivileged earned him widespread respect and admiration.
