Introduction
The Tabo Monastery was featured on a commemorative stamp issued as part of the Millennium Issue titled “Unity in Diversity, Respect for All Religions.” The stamp honours one of the oldest and most important Buddhist monasteries in India and celebrates the country’s tradition of religious harmony.
Location and History
Tabo Monastery is situated in the beautiful Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by snow-clad mountains, the monastery is more than one thousand years old and is among the oldest functioning Buddhist monasteries in the world.

Architecture and Art
The monastery contains nine halls filled with remarkable works of art. Inside these halls are stucco images of the Buddha and magnificent wall paintings.
These paintings depict episodes from the life of Gautama Buddha as well as stories from the Jataka tales, which narrate the previous lives of the Buddha.

The paintings show Sudhana meeting various spiritual guides, known as Kalyanamitra, during his quest. These scenes are arranged in a continuous narrative and often use repeated figures and symbolic gestures, or mudras, to show movement and spiritual meaning.
