A Legacy of Excellence in Indian Cricket
Established in 1930, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is one of the oldest and most prestigious cricket associations in India. Formed with the objective of promoting and popularising cricket across the state, TNCA has played a pivotal role in the development of the sport in Tamil Nadu and the country at large.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was also a founding member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Over the decades, TNCA has significantly contributed to shaping the policies, objectives, and activities of Indian cricket, cementing its place as a cornerstone of the game’s administration in India.
Nurturing Cricketing Legends
Throughout its illustrious history, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has been instrumental in identifying and nurturing young cricketing talent. Many players groomed under TNCA have gone on to represent India at the highest level. Notable cricketers produced by TNCA include C. Ramasamy, M.J. Gopalan, C.R. Rangachary, A.G. Kripal Singh, S. Venkataraghavan, V.V. Kumar, Bharath Reddy, Robin Singh, K. Srikkanth, L. Sivaramakrishnan, W.V. Raman, S. Ramesh, and Hemang K. Badani.
Among these legends, S. Venkataraghavan and K. Srikkanth had the distinguished honour of captaining the Indian national cricket team.
TNCA also holds a unique distinction in Indian sports history by producing two double internationals:
- C. Ramasamy, who represented India in both cricket and tennis
- M.J. Gopalan, who played international cricket and hockey for the country
World-Class Infrastructure and Hosting International Matches
Since its inception, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has hosted 37 Test Matches and 10 One Day Internationals, reinforcing its reputation as a premier cricketing body.
One of TNCA’s most significant milestones was the construction of the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk. The foundation stone was laid in 1971, and the stadium was completed in 1979. With a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators, it remains one of India’s most historic cricket venues.
To adapt to the growing popularity of limited-overs and day/night cricket, TNCA installed international-standard floodlights, making Chepauk a preferred venue for one-day internationals. The first floodlit ODI at Chepauk, played between New Zealand and Australia, took place in 1996.
Commitment to Grassroots Development
In July 2005, the Executive Committee of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association approved the establishment of the TNCA Cricket Academy, further strengthening its commitment to grassroots development.
Beyond elite training, TNCA actively supports cricket at the district and grassroots levels by:
- Supplying free cricket balls to city and district teams
- Assisting District Cricket Associations with turf wicket preparation
- Supporting the purchase of essential cricket infrastructure and equipment
A Lasting Contribution to Indian Cricket
Through sustained efforts in infrastructure development, talent identification, and administrative leadership, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has rendered exceptional service to Indian cricket. Its continued focus on nurturing young cricketers has enabled many players from Tamil Nadu to represent India on the international stage.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
In recognition of its outstanding contribution to Indian cricket, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was honoured with a commemorative postage stamp issued by the Department of Posts. This special stamp celebrates TNCA’s decades-long service in promoting cricket, developing world-class infrastructure, and nurturing generations of cricketers who have represented India at the international level.
The issuance of the stamp stands as a national tribute to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s enduring legacy and its vital role in shaping the growth of cricket in the country.
