A Brave Freedom Fighter of the Quit India Movement

On 29 September 1942, she led a large procession in Tamluk, holding the national flag and marching forward with determination. The movement in the region had already weakened British authority, as people had taken control of several institutions.

During the procession, British forces opened fire on the demonstrators. Despite being shot, Matangini Hazra continued to advance, firmly holding the national flag.

Martyrdom and Legacy

Matangini Hazra was struck by bullets during the procession, but even in her final moments, she did not let the national flag fall. Her sacrifice became a powerful symbol of courage and devotion to the nation.

Her role in the movement and her martyrdom inspired many others to continue the struggle for freedom. She remains one of the most respected figures of India’s independence movement.

Recognition and Philatelic Honour

To honor her contribution to India’s freedom struggle, India Post issued commemorative postage stamps featuring Matangini Hazra along with Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee. These stamps highlight their important roles in the movement in Tamluk.
