Lalji Temple, Kalna
The Lalji Temple at Kalna, located in West Bengal, is one of the oldest surviving and most significant temples in the renowned group of terracotta temples of Kalna. Built in 1739 AD by Braja Kishori Devi, the wife of Maharaja Jagat Ram, the temple is a fine example of Bengal’s rich tradition of terracotta architecture and devotional art.
Dedicated to Radha and Krishna, the Lalji Temple stands out for its distinctive architectural features and symbolic detailing. Inside the temple परिसर, a bright yellow Garuda faces the principal idols of Radha and Krishna, adding a unique visual and devotional element to the sacred space. Surrounding the base of the temple are a series of miniature shrines, intricately designed and adorned with terracotta panels that depict vivid scenes from the Ramayana, bringing epic narratives to life through baked clay.
One of the most striking features of the Lalji Temple is its roof crowned with 25 peaks, a rare and remarkable architectural element that sets it apart from other terracotta temples in the region. The use of terracotta plaques throughout the structure reflects the skill of artisans who transformed clay into detailed storytelling panels, blending religious devotion with artistic excellence.
The Lalji Temple not only serves as a place of worship but also stands as a cultural landmark that reflects the religious fervor, artistic sensibilities, and architectural innovation of its time. It remains an enduring symbol of Bengal’s terracotta temple tradition.
