The Supreme Sacrifice

The episode of Ram and Jatayu in the Ramayana is a moving narrative of courage, loyalty, and selfless sacrifice. It highlights the deep bond between righteousness and devotion, even beyond human relationships.

Jatayu’s Brave Stand

When Ravana abducted Sita and carried her away in his aerial chariot towards Lanka, her cries for help echoed through the forests. Hearing her distress, Jatayu, the aged and valiant king of birds, rose to defend her.

Though old and aware of Ravana’s immense power, Jatayu fearlessly attacked the demon king in mid-air. A fierce battle ensued. Jatayu shattered Ravana’s chariot and tried to rescue Sita, but Ravana ultimately overpowered him and cruelly severed his wings. Gravely wounded, Jatayu fell to the forest floor.

Ram’s Grief and Gratitude

While searching for Sita, Ram and Lakshman came upon the dying Jatayu. With his last breaths, Jatayu narrated the events of Sita’s abduction and informed Ram that Ravana had taken her towards Lanka.

Ram was deeply moved by Jatayu’s bravery and sacrifice. He embraced the wounded bird and mourned him as a father figure, for Jatayu had been a friend of King Dashrath. In a profound gesture of respect and gratitude, Ram personally performed Jatayu’s last rites, granting him divine liberation.

Symbolism of the Episode

The story of Ram and Jatayu reflects timeless values:

  • Selfless sacrifice in the defense of righteousness
  • Loyalty that transcends age and physical limitations
  • Compassion and gratitude shown by Lord Ram
  • The triumph of dharma even in moments of loss

Jatayu’s act demonstrates that devotion is not measured by strength but by courage and intent.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To honour the epic narrative of the Ramayana, the Department of Posts released a Special Commemorative Postage Stamp series depicting significant episodes from the ancient Sanskrit epic composed by Maharishi Valmiki.

The “Ram & Jatayu” commemorative stamp beautifully captures the poignant moment of Ram beside the fallen Jatayu, symbolizing sacrifice, devotion, and divine compassion. The stamp serves as a philatelic tribute to this powerful episode that continues to inspire generations.
