A Century of Theological Education and Social Leadership
Foundation and Vision
The United Theological College (UTC), Bengaluru, was founded on 8 July 1910 with the objective of training leaders for the Church and society in India. Beginning modestly with about ten students and seven staff members, the College has grown steadily over the decades and today trains more than 160 students.
UTC trains clergy drawn from all Christian denominations and was the first institution of its kind in India in terms of its ecumenical character and composition. Over the last century, it has produced generations of leaders who have rendered distinguished service to society, the Church and the nation.
Academic Excellence and Global Engagement
From time to time, the College receives special students and visiting teams from India and abroad for specialised training, academic exchange and interaction. UTC houses a well-endowed library, regarded as one of the finest theological libraries in the world. The library preserves rare imprints and manuscripts over a hundred years old, which are maintained in its archives.
Located at the heart of Bengaluru, the College regularly hosts seminars, workshops and public lectures, contributing significantly to the intellectual and cultural life of the city and standing out as an enduring academic icon.
Legacy of Inspiration and Service
The United Theological College has had the honour of welcoming several eminent world leaders. Mahatma Gandhi visited the College in 1927, and during his visit remarked:
“To live the gospel is the most effective way … I can say that the life of service and uttermost simplicity is the best preaching.”
Guided by such ideals, UTC encourages its community to be responsible citizens, committed to justice, service and nation-building.
Campus and Heritage
The UTC campus is renowned for its old, sprawling trees and serene environment. It houses several heritage buildings, including its historic main block. The beautifully maintained gardens add to the campus’s charm and make it a visual landmark in the city.
Centenary Celebrations and Commemoration
As the United Theological College stands on the threshold of its centenary celebrations, it reflects on a hundred years of academic excellence, spiritual formation and social commitment.
In recognition of its historic role in theological education and societal leadership, India Post is pleased to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the United Theological College, Bengaluru
