Combining the fearless courage of Rani Lakshmibai and the spiritual strength and compassion of Ahilyabai Holkar, Vijaya Raje Scindia (1919–2001) left an enduring imprint on India’s socio-political life.
Early Life and Education
Born into an aristocratic family, she received her early education in Sagar. She pursued higher studies at the Dr. Annie Besant Theosophical College in Varanasi and the Isabel Thorburn College in Lucknow. Later, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by Vikram University.
In 1941, she married Jivajirao Scindia, the ruler of the princely state of Gwalior, becoming the Rajmata of the Scindia royal family.
Political Journey
Her entry into politics came in 1957 when she was elected to the Lok Sabha as a member of the Indian National Congress. Over the years, she won multiple elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and State Assembly, earning a reputation as a principled and respected leader.
In 1967, guided by her convictions, she resigned from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Despite her popularity, she consistently stayed away from positions of power, even when considered for roles such as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh or President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Commitment to Society
For Rajamata Vijaya Raje Scindia, politics was a means to serve society. After the demise of her husband in 1961, she devoted herself entirely to social and public causes.
She made significant contributions to:
- Promotion of education through the establishment and support of institutions
- Women’s empowerment and welfare initiatives
- Upliftment of the poor and marginalized sections, especially in and around Gwalior
Her life reflected a rare blend of public service, humility, and unwavering dedication.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To honour her remarkable contributions, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on Vijaya Raje Scindia.
The stamp stands as a tribute to a leader who devoted her life to nation-building, social service, and patriotic ideals, inspiring generations to follow her path of selfless service.
