India’s Eternal Spiritual Tradition
Since the Vedic times, India has been a land of deep spirituality, wisdom, and devotion. Its scriptures not only address human aspirations but also elevate the soul towards higher consciousness. In this majestic spiritual landscape, Paliyad in Gujarat holds a revered place, comparable to Haridwar and other sacred pilgrimages. It has become a beacon of faith for millions of devotees.
Birth and Divine Incarnation
Shri Patamanbapu and Aai Ranbai Ma of the Kathi clan in Paliyad village, Saurashtra, were blessed with a child after years of prayer and devotion. A yogic saint practising penance at Chandangiri blessed Patamanbapu and foretold that Ramdev Peer himself would be born as his son. True to the prophecy, Visamanbapu was born on the 5th day of Maha Sud, 1825 (Gujarati calendar). From childhood, he was revered for his saintly nature and miraculous powers, and is hailed as the incarnation of Ramdev Peer.
Spiritual Journey and Teachings
Guided by eminent saints such as Shri Gorakhbapu of Songadh and Shri Daanbapu of Chalala, Visamanbapu dedicated his life to sainthood. Despite living in the turbulent period of Kali Yuga, he uplifted countless devotees, kings, and common people with his devotion, compassion, and spiritual wisdom.
At the age of sixty, on the 11th day of Bhadarva Sud, 1885 (Gujarati calendar), Visamanbapu entrusted the leadership of Paliyad Thakurdham to his nephew Shri Laxmanbapu, before attaining salvation. His parting instructions—to serve saints, care for cows, and feed every visitor without discrimination—became the core philosophy of the Paliyad cult.
Legacy and Social Reform
After Visamanbapu, leaders such as Laxmanbapu, Purna Thakar, Nirmalaba, and Unadbapu carried forward his teachings. Unadbapu in particular fought against social evils like alcohol, gambling, and non-vegetarianism, laying the foundation for a virtuous society.
Vihaldham, Paliyad
On the banks of river Goma, Visamanbapu established Yatradham, now known as Vihaldham, Paliyad, about 15 km from Botad. It welcomes 5,000–6,000 devotees daily, offering free meals to all without any caste or creed distinction. A grand fair is held on every Amavasya (new moon day), drawing lakhs of devotees who come to seek blessings. The tradition of service and equality remains the hallmark of this pilgrimage.
Modern Welfare Activities
In keeping with Visamanbapu’s teachings, the organisation at Paliyad continues to work for social upliftment. Its initiatives include:
- Free medical camps and treatments, including eye surgeries.
- Scholarships and book aid for underprivileged students.
- Financial support for higher education of meritorious children.
- Maintenance of a gaushala (cow shelter) and provision of ambulance services.
Commemoration
The Department of Posts is honoured to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Visamanbapu, paying tribute to his divine life, his message of compassion and service, and his everlasting contribution to the spiritual and social welfare of society.
