Voorhees College, located in Vellore, is one of the oldest educational institutions in India. Known for its excellence in education, the college has a rich tradition of nurturing scholars and leaders who have contributed significantly to the nation. Among its distinguished alumni is Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President of India and a renowned philosopher.
Origin and Early Development
The origin of the institution dates back to 1895, when two institutions were merged:
- Arcot Academy at Ranipet
- Church of Scotland Mission High School
After the merger, the institution was renamed Arcot Mission High School, which was later upgraded to an Intermediate College.
In 1898, it became Arcot Mission College, with William I serving as its first Principal. The college was affiliated with the prestigious University of Madras.
Establishment of the Present Campus
In 1905, the foundation stone of the present college building was laid by H. N. Cobb.
In the same year, a generous donation of 25,000 US dollars was made by Ralph Voorhees, a supporter of the institution from the United States. In recognition of this contribution, the college was renamed Elizabeth R. Voorhees College, after his wife Elizabeth R. Voorhees.
Indian Leadership
In 1940, V. P. Adiseshiah was appointed as the first Indian Principal of the college. His leadership marked an important phase in the institution’s development. In recognition of his service, the Government honoured him with the title “Rao Saheb.”
Academic Vision and Contribution
The college has always emphasized holistic education and personality development. With more than 2,000 students, it offers education up to the research level in various disciplines.
Located in one of Tamil Nadu’s socially and economically backward districts, the institution has played a significant role in spreading higher education and uplifting underprivileged communities. Through its academic and social initiatives, the college has contributed greatly to regional development.
Legacy
For over a century, Voorhees College has maintained a strong reputation for academic excellence, leadership development, and social commitment.
To recognize its valuable contribution to education and society, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Voorhees College, Vellore.
