Cobra Lily
Botanical Name: Arisaema wallachianum
Family: Araceae
The Cobra Lily is one of the most intriguing and distinctive wildflowers of the Himalayan region, instantly recognizable by its dramatic, hooded appearance. Its name comes from the cobra-like incurved spathe, which measures 7–21 cm in length and is beautifully striped in shades of purple or bronze.
This fascinating species grows widely from Himachal Pradesh to Sikkim, flourishing in moist forested slopes and high-altitude meadows at elevations of 1,800 to 4,300 metres. Flowering from July to September, the plant’s unusual structure and striking coloration make it a captivating sight in the wild.
The Cobra Lily is an excellent example of nature’s inventive design, showcasing the remarkable botanical diversity of the Indian Himalayas.
By featuring this rare species, India Post highlights the beauty and ecological importance of India’s wild flora and strengthens the message of conserving our rich natural heritage.
