Botanical Name: Cremanthodium ellisii
Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower family)
The Himalayan Mini Sunflower is a striking perennial herb that brightens the high-altitude landscapes of the Himalayas with its radiant charm. Growing 25–35 cm tall, this delicate plant bears solitary, nodding flowers that resemble miniature sunflowers. Each bloom, measuring 4–7 cm, features dark central disk florets surrounded by narrow, elliptic yellow ray florets, creating a captivating contrast against the rugged mountain terrain.
Found at elevations ranging from 3,500 to 4,800 metres, the species thrives from Kashmir to Southeast Tibet, enduring harsh alpine conditions. The flowering season extends from July to September, during which the meadows come alive with its cheerful golden tones.
By including the Himalayan Mini Sunflower in its commemorative issue, India Post pays tribute to the brilliance and diversity of India’s wild flora, especially those flourishing in remote and pristine Himalayan habitats.
