Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Women
8th March is observed worldwide as International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the economic, political, and social achievements of women. It is a tribute to the story of ordinary women who have shaped history through courage, resilience, and determination. Rooted in centuries of struggle for equality, this day acknowledges the historic and revolutionary role of women’s movements, including their vital contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
International Women’s Day underscores an essential truth: lasting global peace, social progress, and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality, and empowerment of women. It also recognizes the immense contribution of women to strengthening international peace and security.
Status of Women in India
Over the years, the status of women in India has undergone significant transformation. Today, women actively participate in diverse fields such as education, politics, media, art and culture, service sectors, science, and technology.
The Constitution of India guarantees equal rights to men and women and is firmly grounded in the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity, and justice. Women’s rights to equality and non-discrimination are recognized as justiciable fundamental rights. Importantly, the Constitution permits affirmative action in favor of women, clarifying that such measures are consistent with the principle of non-discrimination.
India has consistently emphasized the protection and promotion of women’s human rights. National plans and policies reflect a vision of development that extends beyond economic growth to include human dignity, freedom, and well-being for all.
Legislative and Policy Initiatives
Various developmental policies and programmes implemented by the Government have led to measurable improvements in the socio-economic status of women. A significant milestone in this direction is the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, which addresses violence within the private sphere of the household and provides legal protection and support to women facing abuse.
Theme of the Year
The theme adopted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development for this year’s International Women’s Day is:
“Survival to Success: Celebrate Her Life”
This theme highlights the journey of women from mere survival to empowerment and achievement, celebrating their resilience, aspirations, and rightful place in society.
Miniature Sheet on Women’s Day
To mark the occasion, the Department of Posts has released a Miniature Sheet consisting of set of four commemorative postage stamps on “Women’s Day.”
The stamps portray women in their nurturing and preserving roles, symbolizing hope, aspirations, skills, confidence, and the quest for emancipation and respect. Floral motifs on the stamps represent the natural blooming of hope and joy in every woman’s life, while swans evoke grace and the celebration of womanhood.
Through this philatelic tribute, the Department of Posts honors the invaluable contributions of women and reaffirms the commitment to equality, dignity, and empowerment for all women.
