The 3rd World Table Tennis Championships, taking place in Calcutta from February 6 to 16, 1975, is one of the largest sporting events ever hosted in India. Approximately 800 elite table tennis players from 62 countries will compete for the championship titles. The World Table Tennis Championships were held annually from 1927 to 1939 and from 1947 to 1957, and have been held biennially since 1959.

The inaugural championships in London in 1927 featured participants from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, India, Sweden, and Wales. Over the years, the championships have been hosted by various countries, with India hosting it in Bombay in 1952 with 19 participating nations. Now, 23 years later, India has the honor of hosting the championships again. The event will be held at the new Netaji Subhas Indoor Stadium, the largest indoor stadium in India. Table tennis enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting and memorable event in Calcutta. The Posts & Telegraphs Department is pleased to issue a commemorative stamp to mark this occasion.
