The 22nd International Geological Congress, scheduled to convene in New Delhi from December 14 to 22, 1964, marks a significant milestone as the first congress of its kind to be held in Asia. Approximately 92 countries will be represented, making it the largest International Scientific Congress ever hosted in Asia.
Established in 1875, the International Geological Congress aims to advance investigations related to the study of the Earth from theoretical perspectives. The inaugural session took place in Paris in 1878, and subsequent sessions have convened every 3 or 4 years in various cities worldwide.
During the New Delhi Congress, discussions will cover recent advancements in different aspects of geology across sixteen sections. Additionally, meetings of various commissions and affiliated bodies of the Congress, along with the International Union of Geological Sciences founded in 1960, will coincide with the event. Papers presented and discussions held during the congress will be published afterward.
In commemoration of this historic event, the Posts and Telegraphs Department is honored to issue a special stamp on December 14, 1964. The stamp features a motif representing the Earth, the primary subject of study for geologists. Symbolically, the stamp depicts the geological hammer, a fundamental tool for geologists, as the axis of the globe.
