Promoting Travel, Unity and Youth Development

The Youth Hostels Association of India is a leading organization dedicated to promoting affordable travel, youth interaction, and cultural exchange across India. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee alongside India hosting the 42nd International Youth Hostel Federation Conference in 1998.

Origin of the Youth Hostel Movement

The concept of youth hostels began in 1909 through the efforts of Richard Schirrmann, a German school teacher who organized educational excursions for his students.

This idea evolved into a global movement, leading to the formation of the International Youth Hostel Federation in 1932 at Amsterdam. India later hosted the 42nd IYHF Conference in New Delhi from August 23–27, 1998.

Role and Vision of Youth Hostels

Youth hostels aim to:

  • Promote friendship and cultural exchange among young people
  • Encourage community living and global understanding
  • Inspire awareness about environmental conservation and biodiversity

The internationally recognized logo of Youth Hostelling International—a blue triangle with a hut and tree—symbolizes shelter, nature, and unity.

About Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI)

The Youth Hostels Association of India was established on 14th July 1949 by a group of educationists from Maharaja College, Mysore.

By 1998, YHAI had grown significantly:

  • Over 305 units across India
  • 22 state branches
  • A wide network of hostels offering safe, clean, and affordable accommodation

Activities and Programs

YHAI organizes a wide range of activities aimed at youth development:

  • Cycling expeditions (short and long distance)
  • Adventure sports and trekking in mountains, deserts, and coastal regions
  • Camps and workshops on national integration and environmental awareness
  • Leadership training programs to promote discipline and initiative
  • Special outreach programs for tribal and border area youth

These initiatives help build confidence, teamwork, and social responsibility among young people.

Global Connectivity and Innovation

Through the International Youth Hostel Federation, youth hostels worldwide are connected via the International Booking Network (IBN), making travel easier for global users while maintaining the core values of the movement.

The federation is also recognized by UNESCO, highlighting its global importance.

Commemorative Recognition

To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of YHAI and India hosting the 42nd IYHF Conference, India Post issued a special commemorative postage stamp.

Conclusion

The Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) continues to play a vital role in promoting youth engagement, affordable travel, and national integration. By combining adventure, education, and cultural exchange, it empowers young people to become responsible global citizens.
