About this stamp
75 Years of Dinamalar
Dinamalar, a Tamil daily newspaper, was founded in 1951 by T. V. Ramasubbaiyer, a businessman and social activist from Nagercoil, to give voice to the movement of Tamil-speaking people in the then Travancore-Cochin State who wanted their regions, including Kanyakumari district, joined to Tamil Nadu. The movement succeeded in 1956. First published from Thiruvananthapuram, the paper moved to Tirunelveli in 1957 and is now published from 12 centres, including New Delhi and Bengaluru.
Contributions to Tamil Journalism
Dinamalar was the first major media organisation to adopt reformed Tamil letters, which the State Government later adopted as the standard. In 1982 it introduced Varamalar, the first free weekly supplement in India, and in 1985 the first free children’s supplement in Tamil. It also publishes a student edition and runs free examination-preparation events for government school students.
The Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on 5 September 2026 to mark the newspaper’s Platinum Jubilee.
