Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia – Founder of Scindia School

Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia was a visionary ruler of Gwalior who made significant contributions to education and social progress. In 1897, he founded the Sardars School, later known as the Scindia School, with the aim of providing quality education to young students.

He believed that education should not be limited to classroom learning alone. Therefore, along with academic studies, he encouraged the development of practical skills such as shooting, riding, discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship. His forward-looking vision laid the foundation for one of India’s most respected educational institutions.

The inset portrait of Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia on the commemorative stamp pays tribute to his enduring legacy as the founder of the school.

Gwalior Fort – Seat of Learning and Heritage

The historic Gwalior Fort, one of India’s grandest hill forts, later became the home of the Scindia School. Spread across about 110 acres, the fort provided a majestic and inspiring environment for education.

Known for its architectural splendour and historical importance, Gwalior Fort added prestige and identity to the institution. Its strong walls, magnificent palaces, and commanding position symbolized courage, heritage, and excellence.

The presence of the school within the fort connected students with India’s rich cultural and historical traditions, while also shaping them into responsible future leaders.

Commemorative Stamp Tribute

The special commemorative postage stamp marking the centenary of Scindia School beautifully depicts Gwalior Fort along with an inset of Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia, honouring both the founder and the historic seat of the institution.
