Introduction
The Scindia School, one of India’s renowned educational institutions, was founded in 1897 by the late Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia. Originally established as the Sardars School at Jal Vihar in the city of Gwalior, the institution aimed to provide quality education along with the development of practical skills and character.
Early Vision and Training
From its beginning, the school emphasized not only academic learning but also the cultivation of important life skills such as shooting, riding, and sports activities. This balanced approach helped in shaping disciplined, confident, and capable young students.
Shift to Gwalior Fort
Later, the school was shifted to the historic Gwalior Fort, where it occupied an area of about 110 acres. The majestic surroundings of the fort added to the prestige and unique identity of the institution.
Growth and Development
In 1929, the school magazine was launched, providing students with a platform for literary and creative expression. A School Council was also established to discuss improvements and encourage student participation in school affairs.
During this period, the Scindia School developed into a premier public school, adapting itself to the educational needs of modern times.
Social Service and Community Welfare
The school community became deeply involved in helping the underprivileged and contributed significantly to social welfare for many decades. Its Social Service League adopted the village of Sonsa, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to community development and service.
Astachal – The Symbol of Reflection
One of the most cherished traditions of the school is Astachal, where students gather in meditation. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Astachal continues to inspire generations of students with ideals of truth, peace, and discipline.
Commemorative Stamp Issue
To celebrate the Centenary of Scindia School, Gwalior, the Department of Posts issued a set of two commemorative postage stamps. The stamp design beautifully depicts students meditating at Astachal, the Gwalior Fort, and an inset portrait of the founder, Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia.
