Introduction
The Scindia School is one of India’s most prestigious educational institutions, founded in 1897 by Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia I. Situated atop the historic Gwalior Fort, the school has earned a reputation for academic excellence, leadership training, discipline, and the preservation of Indian values.
Astachal – A Unique Tradition
One of the most remarkable traditions of the Scindia School is Astachal, a daily gathering held at sunset. Students, dressed in white kurta-pyjamas, assemble in an open-air amphitheatre to spend moments in silence, prayer, meditation, or listening to peaceful music.
Origin of Astachal
Astachal was established in the 1940s under the guidance of Principal F.G. Pearce and educator K.C. Shukla. The amphitheatre was completed in 1943 as a special place for spiritual reflection and inner growth.
Spiritual Significance
Astachal represents calmness, discipline, and self-awareness. As the sun sets over the horizon, students pause from their daily routine to reflect quietly. This practice helps in developing balanced personalities, mental peace, and a sense of responsibility.
Gandhi Statue at Astachal
In 1948, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed at Astachal. It symbolizes truth, simplicity, and the pursuit of higher ideals, inspiring generations of students.
Importance in School Life
Astachal has become the spiritual heart of the Scindia School. It teaches students that education is not limited to books alone, but also includes character building, values, and self-discipline.
Commemorative Recognition
The Department of Posts honoured the heritage of the Scindia School through commemorative postage stamps, with Astachal representing the institution’s timeless tradition of learning and reflection.
