Wild Asses of India

On May 10, 2013, India Post released this ₹25 miniature sheet to showcase the incredible survival skills of India's wild equids. This issue brings together two distinct cousins: the Kiang, which thrives in the thin air of the Ladakh plateau, and the Indian Wild Ass (Khur), which roams the salt-crusted Little Rann of Kutch. The design contrasts these two environments—one a freezing Himalayan desert and the other a blistering saline wasteland—highlighting how these resilient animals have adapted to some of the most extreme conditions on Earth. While the Kiang is known for its larger size and chestnut coat, the Khur is celebrated for its incredible speed, capable of outrunning most predators in the open desert. This miniature sheet serves as a tribute to India's unique biodiversity and a reminder of the ongoing conservation efforts needed to protect these rare and majestic inhabitants of our wilderness.
