Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA)

On May 25, 1994, India Post issued a ₹2 stamp to honor the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), marking over five decades of its revolutionary impact on Indian culture. Founded in 1943 against the backdrop of the Bengal Famine and World War II, IPTA emerged as a grassroots cultural movement that aimed to use the performing arts as a tool for social change and political awakening. The stamp recognizes IPTA’s unique approach of taking "art to the people." By integrating traditional folk forms like Jatra, Tamasha, and Burrakatha with modern progressive themes, the association gave a voice to the marginalized, including peasants, laborers, and the working class. Its motto, "People’s Theatre Stars the People," reflected its commitment to portraying the realities of common life rather than escapist entertainment. IPTA became a melting pot for India’s greatest creative minds, including legends like Ravi Shankar, Balraj Sahni, Prithviraj Kapoor, and Bijon Bhattacharya. Their landmark production Nabanna redefined Indian theatre by moving away from grand mythological spectacles toward stark, powerful social realism. This commemorative issue celebrates IPTA’s legacy in democratizing the arts and its enduring role in shaping a culture of dissent and social consciousness in post-independence India.
