About this stamp

On the Stamp

The main building of the Indian Institute of Science, with its clock tower, on the ₹5 stamp.

A Hundred Years of the Indian Institute of Science

India Post issued two stamps, ₹5 and ₹20, and a ₹25 miniature sheet on 14 December 2008 for the centenary of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, founded in 1909 with the support of Jamsetji Tata and still known locally as the Tata Institute. It became a deemed university in 1958 and is one of India’s foremost institutions for research in science and engineering. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
