GAIL (India) Limited, formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited, was established in August 1984, heralding a new era of natural gas utilization in India. The company played a transformative role in harnessing and distributing natural gas as a major energy resource for the nation.
One of GAIL’s earliest and most significant contributions was enabling the use of natural gas that was previously being flared in the offshore fields of Bombay High. By building a vast pipeline infrastructure of over 6,700 km—accounting for more than 82% of India’s total natural gas pipeline network—GAIL ensured the systematic transportation and distribution of gas across the country.
Expanding Energy Access and Economic Growth
GAIL’s pipeline network supplies natural gas equivalent to approximately 188 million barrels of oil per year, significantly contributing to import substitution and promoting cleaner energy alternatives. The infrastructure supports critical sectors such as fertilizers and power generation, thereby strengthening the nation’s economic backbone.
The network spans multiple states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Tripura, ensuring equitable geographical distribution of energy resources. By connecting domestic gas producers with markets, even in remote regions, GAIL has facilitated the monetization and development of otherwise inaccessible gas fields.
Pioneering the Clean Fuel Revolution
GAIL spearheaded the clean fuel revolution in India by introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The introduction of CNG significantly reduced vehicular pollution levels and provided an economical and environment-friendly alternative to conventional fuels.
Additionally, GAIL has been instrumental in expanding City Gas Distribution (CGD) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) networks, promoting cleaner fuel usage in households and industries across urban India.
Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives
In line with its commitment to social responsibility, GAIL established Air Pollution Related Disease Diagnostic Centres (APRDCs) in over 20 cities at a cost of approximately ₹4 crore. These centers, set up in collaboration with reputed government and trust-managed hospitals, provide modern diagnostic facilities and treatment for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, particularly benefiting economically disadvantaged sections of society.
Excellence in Safety and Global Recognition
GAIL has built an impeccable reputation in project execution and adherence to stringent safety standards in pipeline operations, petrochemicals, and LPG plants. The company has received numerous prestigious awards, including OISD Awards, British Safety Council Awards, and recognition from the International Project Management Association. It has also consistently been ranked among the world’s top gas utilities by Platts.
Through its commitment to environmental sustainability, operational excellence, and nation-building, GAIL continues to play a vital role in India’s energy security and economic development.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To recognize its pioneering contribution to the development of natural gas infrastructure and promotion of clean energy in India, India Post has issued a commemorative postage stamp on GAIL (India) Limited, honouring the organization’s enduring service to the nation.
