A Century of Promoting Trade and Industry

The Madhya Pradesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MPCCI), Gwalior has played a significant role in promoting trade, commerce, and industrial development in central India. Over more than a century, the organization has contributed to economic progress not only in the state of Madhya Pradesh but also across the nation. Acting as an important link between the business community and government institutions, the Chamber has consistently worked to encourage industrial growth and economic cooperation.

Foundation and Vision

The idea of establishing the Chamber was conceived by Madhav Rao Scindia I, the ruler of the princely state of Gwalior. During his visit to Europe, he observed similar institutions that facilitated dialogue between business leaders and governing authorities. Inspired by these models, he envisioned an organization that would provide a platform for exchanging ideas and promoting industrial progress.

With this objective, the Madhya Pradesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry was established in 1906 with just 24 members. From its inception, the Chamber aimed to support industrialization and the overall economic development of the region.

Contribution to National and Economic Development

During the period when the Swadeshi Movement was gaining momentum, the Chamber supported nationalist ideals and worked alongside national leaders to promote indigenous industries and economic self-reliance.

Over the decades, MPCCI expanded its activities and membership, bringing together trade associations as well as numerous commercial and industrial enterprises from across the country. Today, the Chamber has approximately 2,000 members.

The organization is associated with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), New Delhi, and is also a member of the Federation of Madhya Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Industrial Development in Madhya Pradesh

Through its initiatives and advocacy, MPCCI has played a vital role in the development of key industrial areas in Madhya Pradesh. Regions such as Malanpur, Banmore, Maharajpura, Baraghata, and Birlanagar have grown into important industrial zones. These developments have helped transform Gwalior into one of the major industrial centers of the state.

Symbolism of the Commemorative Stamp

The commemorative stamp issued in honor of MPCCI highlights the evolution of coins circulated in and around Gwalior and neighboring regions of central India. Coins symbolize economic activity, trade, and prosperity, reflecting the historical development of commerce in the region.

The stamp features coins associated with several historic rulers and periods, including:

  • Coins of Madhav Rao Scindia of Gwalior (1886 A.D.)
  • A ¼ rupee coin issued by Shivaji Rao of the Holkar dynasty of Indore in the name of Shah Alam II
  • A silver rupee issued by Vikramajit Mahendra of Orchha (1796–1817 A.D.) in the name of Shah Alam II
  • Coins issued by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore
  • A ½ anna coin of Independent India (1954)

These coins collectively represent the long tradition of trade, currency, and economic exchange in central India.

Commemoration

Recognizing the Chamber’s remarkable contribution to the promotion of commerce and industry, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on the Madhya Pradesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The stamp celebrates more than a century of dedicated service to economic growth, industrial progress, and the strengthening of India’s business community.
