Uddhavdas Mehta

Freedom Fighter, Ayurvedic Luminary, and Champion of Democracy

Uddhavdas Mehta was born on 9 August 1911 in Bhopal to Pandit Moolchand Ji Pauranik. From an early age, he displayed intellectual brilliance and moral courage. He received formal education in Sanskrit and Ayurveda at Kashi, where he developed deep expertise in classical Ayurvedic texts and traditional medicine.

Pioneer of Ayurveda and Public Health

A highly respected Ayurvedic physician, Uddhavdas Mehta dedicated his life to the preparation and promotion of scripture-based Ayurvedic medicines. His lifelong commitment to Ayurveda extended beyond medical practice—he worked tirelessly to organize and strengthen the Ayurvedic fraternity.
He played a key role in:

• Initiating the celebration of Dhanvantari Jayanti
• Serving as President of the Bhopal Ayurvedic Mandal
• Leading the Madhya Pradesh Ayurvedic Mandal

His efforts significantly contributed to the recognition and institutional growth of Ayurveda in India.

Courageous Leader Against Oppression

Uddhavdas Mehta’s life was defined by fearlessness, integrity, and service to society. He resolutely rejected official positions and inducements offered by the Nawabi regime, choosing instead to stand with the oppressed.
In 1930, he submitted a 25-point Charter of Demands before the Nawab, boldly articulating the grievances and rights of the people of Bhopal.

Trailblazer in Journalism and Civil Liberties

In 1934, he founded “Praja Pukar”, Bhopal’s first Hindi weekly newspaper, marking a historic moment in regional journalism. Publishing under a repressive regime required exceptional courage. Consequently, cases were filed against him by both the Nawabi and British authorities, from which he was honourably acquitted.

He was actively associated with:

• The Civil Liberties Movement
• Hyderabad Satyagraha
• The establishment and expansion of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Bhopal

Role in Communal Harmony and National Integration

In 1947, Uddhavdas Mehta undertook an indefinite fast against communal violence, compelling the Nawabi administration to restore damaged temples and compensate affected communities.
He also played a decisive role in the movement for Bhopal’s merger with the Indian Union, contributing significantly to national integration in post-independence India.

Legacy and Commemorative Postage Stamp

Recognized as a Freedom Fighter, a defender of democracy, and a tireless advocate of public welfare, Uddhavdas Mehta’s life remains an enduring inspiration. His contributions to Ayurveda, journalism, civil rights, and national unity continue to resonate across generations.
