About this stamp
Two Brothers in the Swaminarayan Faith
India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 28 December 2018 for Kakaji and Pappaji, the brothers who were disciples of Yogiji Maharaj in the Swaminarayan tradition, on their centenary. Pappaji, the elder, was born Babubhai on 1 September 1916 at Borsad, and Kakaji, born Dadubhai on 12 June 1918 at Nadiad; their family came from Karamsad.
Their Work
Babubhai became a school teacher in Mombasa, while Dadubhai studied in Nairobi, Colombo and at the London School of Economics and became a successful businessman. Both gave themselves wholly to Yogiji Maharaj from 1952. They opened initiation into the ascetic life to women for the first time in the Swaminarayan faith, for which they faced ostracism; more than 600 sisters now follow that path. Kakaji founded the Yogi Divine Society, with centres at Sokhada, Sankarda, Mogri, Mumbai and Delhi, and abroad in Chicago and Paris, and both wrote on spiritual life, Kakaji stressing spirituality based on enquiry rather than blind faith.
On the Stamp
