About this stamp
A Hundred Years of Yogoda Satsanga
India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 7 March 2017 for the centenary of the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), founded by Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952), author of Autobiography of a Yogi. His work began in 1917 with a “How-to-Live” school for boys at Dihika, West Bengal, which joined the ideals of the ancient rishis with modern education. A year later he moved the school to Ranchi, and the Ranchi ashram became the centre of the Society. Yogoda is his own word, from yoga, union, and da, that which imparts.
East and West
In 1920 Yogananda went to the United States as India’s delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, and founded the Self-Realization Fellowship there, with its headquarters in Los Angeles. Through YSS and SRF he taught the meditation techniques of Kriya Yoga around the world.
The Society Today
YSS has ashrams at Ranchi, Dakshineswar, Dwarahat and Noida, retreats in nine more places and over 200 meditation centres in India. It runs 23 educational institutions, charitable hospitals and clinics, and gives scholarships and disaster relief.
The stamp was designed by Alka Sharma; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 442,000.
