About this stamp

The Saint of Suttur

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 27 August 2016, his birth centenary, for Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamy (1916–1986), saint and social reformer of Karnataka. Born on 29 August 1916, he was the 23rd pontiff of the Suttur Math on the banks of the Kapila near Mysuru, a line more than a thousand years old.

Schools, Colleges and Hospitals

As a boy he gave up his own studies to start a free boarding home for poor students; it became the seed of more than three hundred institutions built within thirty years, among them colleges of engineering, medicine and pharmacy that drew students from north India and from Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania and Nepal and made Mysuru a centre of education. He set up rural health centres and a hospital at Mysuru, schools for differently abled children, and institutions for music and drama, and brought people of all religions and castes together. In the early 1960s Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar named him Rajaguru of Mysore.

The stamp was designed by Alka Sharma; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 303,000.
