About this stamp

The Navy’s Own Satellite

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 14 February 2015 on Project Rukmani, the Indian Navy’s dedicated communication satellite. The project began on 29 March 2006, when the Navy and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) agreed to build a secure, indigenous satellite communication system covering the Navy’s area of interest at sea. ISRO launched the satellite, GSAT-7, from French Guiana on 30 August 2013. After in-orbit testing of all eleven transponders, the Navy’s units moved onto it in December 2013, making the Indian Navy one of the few navies with a satellite of its own.

Across the Indian Ocean

GSAT-7 provides communication in the UHF, S, C and Ku bands to the Navy’s ships, submarines and aircraft, carrying voice, video and data in near real time. Its footprint spans almost the whole Indian Ocean Region, and it helps the Navy keep watch over both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

The stamp was designed by Suresh Kumar; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.5 million.
