About this stamp

Poet of the Kumaon Hills

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 23 December 2015 on Sumitranandan Pant (20 May 1900 – 28 December 1977), one of the founders of Chhayavaad, the romantic movement of modern Hindi poetry. Born Gusain Dutt at Kausani in Almora district, he grew up among the Kumaon hills, whose beauty runs through his early poems; he began writing at seven. After school at Almora he studied at Queen’s College, Kashi and at Allahabad, where he published Veena and Pallav and did most of his work. Later he spent time at Sri Aurobindo’s ashram in Pondicherry, and his writing took a philosophical turn.

Chidambara

Writing mostly in Sanskritised Hindi, he published twenty-eight works of poetry, verse drama and essays, among them Gunjan, Gramya, Yugant, Yugvani, Lokayatan and Kala aur Boodha Chand. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1961 and the Jnanpith Award in 1968 for Chidambara, and was made a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi in 1969. A museum at Kausani keeps his manuscripts, letters and awards.

The stamp was designed by Nenu Gupta; Security Printing Press, Hyderabad printed 0.3 million.
