About this stamp

Chitralekha

India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 20 April 2011 in honour of Chitralekha, a weekly news magazine published in Gujarati and Marathi. Its first issue came out in 1950, edited by its founder Vaju Kotak (1915–1959), a Gujarati writer, journalist and film screenwriter from Rajkot. After his death in 1959, Madhuri Kotak took charge of the magazine with Harkisan Mehta, who edited it until 1998. Chitralekha gave rise to many well-known Gujarati columnists, among them Kanti Bhatt, Chandrakant Bakshi and Tarak Mehta.

The stamp shows Vaju Kotak, with books, an open book and a quill pen, and the magazine’s name in Gujarati letters.

India Post has no brochure for this issue online, so this text draws on Wikipedia.
