Established in the wake of India’s independence, Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders. Its roots trace back to the Berry White School of Medicine, founded in 1900 by the philanthropist Dr. John Berry White. The establishment of Assam Medical College was a natural progression, fulfilling the need for a full-fledged medical institution in the region.

The college’s journey began in the abandoned military base hospital of the US Army, with the first batch of MBBS students starting their journey in 1947. Since then, Assam Medical College has grown significantly, boasting an annual intake of 200 MBBS seats and 217 postgraduate seats. Over the years, thousands of graduates have emerged from its portals, making significant contributions to patient care, research, and extracurricular activities.

With 28 full-fledged departments, including eight super-specialty departments, Assam Medical College has been at the forefront of medical education and healthcare delivery. The college’s commitment to research is evident through the establishment of the model rural health research unit (MRHRU) and multidisciplinary research unit (MRU), providing impetus to community-based and laboratory-based research.

The visit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in April 2022 marked a significant milestone for Assam Medical College, heralding the inauguration of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital within its premises. This new facility signifies the college’s dedication to advancing healthcare and addressing critical needs in cancer care.

Assam Medical College serves as a nodal center for national health programs and a referral center for several districts in Upper Assam, as well as neighboring states like Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Its impact extends beyond medical education, with allied institutes offering degree, diploma, and certificate courses in dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and paramedical sciences.

As Assam Medical College celebrates its platinum jubilee, it remains a beacon of hope and care, not only for the North East region but for the entire world. India Post recognizes its 75 years of exemplary service by issuing a Commemorative Postage Stamp, acknowledging its invaluable contribution to providing quality medical services to the people of North East India.
