The International Society of Soil Science (ISSS) is a global organization open to individuals and institutions dedicated to the study and application of Soil Science. Its primary objective is to promote research across all branches of Soil Science. To achieve this goal, the ISSS organizes Congresses and Conferences periodically.

The 12th International Congress of Soil Science is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from 8th to 16th February 1982. This marks the first time such a conference is being held in an Asian country. India, being a subcontinent with a diverse range of climates and soils, is well-suited to host such an event. It boasts almost all types of soils found within various climatic zones, including tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, arid, semi-arid, humid, and sub-humid.

The Congress, under the auspices of the Indian Society of Soil Science, will focus on the theme “Managing Soil Resources to Meet the Challenges to Mankind.” Discussions during the conference will revolve around the current state of soil research, aiming to draw attention to the efficient utilization of soil as a natural resource. Additionally, the Congress will address soil-related challenges and priorities to meet the growing needs of humanity.

The Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department is delighted to issue a postage stamp commemorating this significant event, recognizing the importance of soil science in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.
