The 86th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a significant event in the world of Olympic sports. Established in 1896, the IOC serves as the supreme body governing Olympic sports and games, overseeing the organization of all Olympic events. It collaborates with various International Sports Federations (ISF) and National Olympic Committees to facilitate the hosting of the Games.
Currently, the IOC has 28 affiliated International Federations and 151 National Olympic Committees. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), founded in 1927, represents India within the IOC framework. The IOA oversees the participation of Indian athletes in Olympic, Commonwealth, Asian, and other international sports events. It comprises 21 National Sports Federations and 21 State Olympic Associations.
The 86th Session of the IOC is being held in New Delhi from March 21st to 28th, 1983, marking the first time such a session is hosted in India. This session is expected to address critical decisions, including the Eligibility Code for Olympic participants, with significant implications. The main session will take place from March 25th to 28th, accompanied by meetings of the IOC Executive Board and various commissions.
Approximately 80 out of 84 IOC members are expected to participate in the session, which will also involve the election of a Vice President and a member of the Executive Board. The event offers the IOA an opportunity to showcase the international-standard infrastructure developed for the 1982 Asian Games. With minor enhancements, India aims to demonstrate its capability to host the 1992 Olympic Games, a request already communicated to the IOC. The decision on the host for the 1992 Olympics is expected in 1985, and until then, the IOA will continue its efforts to improve existing facilities and persuade the IOC of India’s readiness.
The commemoration of this occasion by the P&T Department through a special postage stamp reflects the significance of India’s involvement in the global Olympic movement and its aspirations to host future Olympic Games.
