About this stamp

On the Stamp

Gandhi and the Aga Khan Palace in Pune, where he was held after his arrest, under the headline “Mahatma Gandhi arrested”.

Do or Die

India Post issued eight ₹5 stamps and a ₹40 miniature sheet on 9 August 2017 for the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement. On 8 August 1942, at the All India Congress Committee meeting at Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay, now August Kranti Maidan, Gandhi launched the Quit India Resolution with the mantra “Do or die: we shall either free India or die in the attempt.” Early the next morning Gandhi, Nehru, Maulana Azad and the other leaders were arrested and the Congress was banned, and strikes, meetings and processions spread across the country. The stamps were designed by Sankha Samanta and printed by India Security Press, Nashik: 0.5 million of each and 0.1 million sheets.
