About this stamp

On the Stamp

A steam locomotive pulling its carriages across open country, with people beside the track, and the emblem “150 Years, Indian Railways”.

150 Years of Indian Railways

India Post issued this ₹15 stamp, also in a miniature sheet, on 16 April 2002, 150 years after the first passenger train in India. In 1853 it ran 34 kilometres between Bombay and Thane on broad gauge: fourteen carriages carrying 400 people, hauled by three steam locomotives, the Sahib, the Sindh and the Sultan. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamp and its sheet.
