About this stamp
A City for Human Unity
India Post issued this ₹5 stamp on 25 February 2018 for the golden jubilee of Auroville, the international township near Puducherry. Inspired by Sri Aurobindo’s vision of human unity, Mirra Alfassa, his spiritual collaborator known as the Mother, founded Auroville on 28 February 1968 as a “living laboratory”, a universal town where people of all countries could live in peace and harmony.
The Township
Planned for up to 50,000 people, Auroville began on a barren plateau mostly in Tamil Nadu, about 10 km north of Puducherry; in fifty years the area has become green again. Its master plan takes the form of a galaxy. At the centre is the Peace Area, with the Matrimandir, the “soul of Auroville”, and an amphitheatre holding an urn with soil from 124 nations and 23 Indian states. Around it lie the industrial, cultural, residential and international zones, and beyond them a green belt of forest, farms and sanctuaries.
In 2018 about 2,800 people from 54 countries lived there. The Auroville Foundation Act of 1988 made it a statutory body, and UNESCO’s General Conference has supported the project in resolutions of 1966, 1968, 1970, 1983 and 2017.
On the Stamp
The golden globe of the Matrimandir between portraits of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, with the words “Auroville International Township – Golden Jubilee”. It was designed by Brahm Prakash and printed by wet offset at the Security Printing Press, Hyderabad.
