A Century of Merit in Public Service
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) traces its origins to the Government of India Act, 1919, and the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1924), which led to the establishment of the Public Service Commission on 1 October 1926. It became the Federal Public Service Commission in 1937 and took its present form with the adoption of the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950.
Role of the Commission
Under Article 320 of the Constitution, UPSC conducts examinations for recruitment to the Union’s civil services, selects candidates through interviews, advises on appointments and recruitment rules, and examines disciplinary matters. For a hundred years it has worked to ensure that civil service appointments are made through a fair, transparent and merit-based process.
The Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on 1 October 2026 to mark 100 years of the Commission.
