About this stamp

On the Stamp

Gandhi seated and writing, beside his handwritten message “I want world sympathy in this battle of Right against Might”, signed at Dandi on 5 April 1930.

The Dandi March

India Post issued four ₹5 stamps and a ₹20 miniature sheet on 6 April 2005, 75 years after the Dandi March, the Salt Satyagraha. Led by Mahatma Gandhi, the march ran for 24 days, from 12 March to 6 April 1930, over 387 kilometres from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, in non-violent protest against the British salt monopoly. Gandhi set out with 78 volunteers and more joined along the way; when he broke the salt laws at Dandi on the morning of 6 April, millions of Indians followed with acts of civil disobedience of their own. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamps themselves.
