About this stamp
Karnataka’s Dandi Marcher
India Post issued this ₹5 diamond-shaped stamp on 3 September 2018 for the martyr Mahadevappa Mailar (1911–1943). He was born on 8 June 1911 at Motebennur, Haveri district, Karnataka, to patriotic parents, and read Gandhi’s Young India as a boy. Chosen by the youth association at Dharwad to go to the Sabarmati Ashram, he convinced Gandhi to let him stay.
Salt Satyagraha
On 12 March 1930 he set out with Gandhi and 78 others on the march to Dandi, the only marcher from Karnataka, and was jailed with him. His wife Siddamma was the only woman from Karnataka in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Back home they founded the Gram Sevashram at Koradur on the Varada river, open to all castes and religions, to fight poverty, untouchability and ignorance.
Quit India
In the Quit India Movement he led a no-tax campaign in south Dharwad. On 1 April 1943, trying to recover land revenue and records the government had stored in the Veerabhadreswara temple at Hosaritti, he was shot by the police, together with his companions Tirakappa Madiwalar and Veerayya Hiremath. Dying, he told his men not to harm the policemen, as the struggle had to stay non-violent. He was 32.
